The Two Villages Walk
(mainly tarmac footpath, with some road walking) Approx 3 miles.
Leave from the Church in Gwernaffield, climbing the hill towards Pantymwyn. Pass the Golf Course on the left, and descend into Pantymwyn, with fine views of Moel Famau ahead. As the road bears right towards Cilcain, (after approx .9 of a mile) cross into Cefn Bychan Road, and follow the road as it turns sharply to the left. The road climbs in 'terraces' up to the highest point where there are wonderful views across to Moel Famau, Cilcain village, and towards Loggerheads. After about .75 mile, the cross roads provides a choice of leaving this route and walking to Loggerheads (straight ahead), or turn right down to the Alyn and the Leete path.
Taking the left turn, climb the steep hill, and follow the road along the side of the Cefn Mawr quarry lands. Descending the hill, the old Pantybuarth Chapel can be seen on the right, now a private house. On the left, the golf course.
After the industrial units on the left, a footpath leads towards the golf course, keep along the path with the hedge to your right, and return along the footpath to Gwernaffield. Turn right to regain the Church.
Alternatively, you may choose to walk on towards the Cadole Road, and turn left at the cross roads. If choosing this route, please note that there is NO FOOTPATH, and the road can be quite busy. Adhere to the Country Code, walk single file towards the oncoming traffic, and BE SEEN. After 200 yards, there is a footpath, and you will see the Church ahead of you.
Leete Walk & Cilcain
(adapted from Rural Walks in Flintshire) Approx 5 miles.
From the Crown Inn Pantymwyn (car park) take the road towards Cilcain. After approximately 200 yds the road bears right at the junction with Cefn Bychan Road. Turn into this road & after approx 50 yds, at the sharp left hand bend take the track straight on & continue through the gate down hill towards the woods. At the edge of the woods the track bears left. Go straight on via a footpath into the woods (stile), & after approx 200 yds this path joins the Leete path. Turn right onto the Leete Path & continue ahead crossing the bridge over the Devil's Gorge. Continue straight ahead along this path for about half a mile. Turn left onto the road at the end of the Leete Path. Walk downhill, cross the bridge over the river Alyn. At the bend part way up the steep hill take the path on the left signposted Pentre. Follow this path & cross a stile into a field. Follow the left hand fence line through 3 further fields. Climb steps & cross 2 stiles edging a woodland strip then continue along the left hand boundary of the next field. Cross a further style into Cilcain Millennium Wood & turn immediately right, walking uphill to a seat & sculpture. Turn left here & walk along the right hand boundary with young trees on the left.
Go through the kissing gate to the road. Turn right along the road & walk uphill into the village. Turn left at the crossroads passing the White Horse pub. Turn left immediately after the church & walk down the lane. At the bottom of the hill turn right along a track (bridleway) After 400 yds turn left uphill along another bridleway, passing a cottage on the right. Continue ahead crossing a small stream & continue along the left hand side of the field. Through another gate & continue along the board walk. Then follow the path as it bears left climbing slowly. Cross the gate/stile & continue ahead on the same path. Continue ahead through 2 more gates leading past a small cottage on the right.
Continue ahead through the gate signposted Loggerheads. Carry straight on along the track through 2 more gates. At the T junction turn left onto the lane signposted Loggerheads & walk downhill to the road. Cross the road & go over the stile opposite onto a concealed footpath. Follow this footpath downhill & across the field to another stile. Cross the farm track go through the gate & continue downhill via 2 more gates to a footbridge over the river. Going uphill along the track in 100 yds it rejoins the Leete Path. Go straight across the Leete Path through the woods until it emerges via a stile into a field. Take the left hand boundary of this field to the next stile. Bearing diagonally right cross the next 2 fields until reaching the rear of the properties on the Cefn Bychan Road. Going in the same direction at the rear of these properties the path joins the track which was originally taken at the start of the walk, & rejoins the Cefn Bychan Road, & the Crown Inn Pantymwyn.
